The gift stewardship committee enhances UB’s ability to attract the private support it needs to remain competitive regionally, nationally and globally, by reviewing the policies and practices that make giving to the UB Foundation for the betterment of the university as donor-friendly as possible.

Charge

Assist the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities relative to the effective stewardship of gifts and grants. Specifically, the committee will:

  1. Recognize and support the increasing and critical role of private philanthropy at a public university;
  2. Understand the fund-raising initiatives and goals established by the University at the direction of the President;
  3. Establish written policies and procedures, including gift acceptance policy, to guide the stewardship activities of the UB Foundation, support the University’s fund-raising program and to avoid issues of quid pro quo;
  4. Review the use of gifts to ensure donor intent is met and that available funds are fully utilized;
  5. Monitor the integrity of the foundation’s gift acceptance/receipting process and ensure compliance with written gift acceptance policy;
  6. Establish donor-friendly language for endowment agreements and other UB Foundation gifting instruments;
  7. Respond to matters pertaining to gift fees;
  8. Consider and respond to proposed in-kind gifts of property, as appropriate;
  9. Monitor board-designated endowments;
  10. Review and recommend annual philanthropic projections for the UB Foundation financial plan;
  11. Oversee matters pertaining to board giving, including annual giving expectations, and advise on solicitation strategies for board members.
  12. Administer scholarship and award funds with restricted criteria.
